Wireless Network at AHSL Tucson

There are two available networks in the Library:

  • UAWiFi – for UA affiliates only. Requires NetID and computer setup up.
  • UAPublic - free and open to everyone, no setup necessary.

Helpful tips and instructions

Set up your laptop (required for UAWiFi)

Visiting faculty members access

  • Access is available to anyone through the UAPublic wireless network.
  • For UAWiFi, ask your department about getting a department sponsored NetID and Password. Learn more.

UMC Patrons

  • All adjunct faculty from UMC can access UAWiFi connection with a NetID and password.
  • If you do not have a NetID, contact your affiliated department about getting a departmental sponsored NetID and password. Anyone without a NetID and password will need to use the UAPublic connection.
  • UMC employees are not qualified for a NetID and therefore can only use the UAPublic network.

Handhelds, PDAs and smartphones

PDAs and smartphones should have access to UAPublic. However, access to the encrypted UAWiFi network is not available at this point. Campus computing and technology is currently working on this.

Connectivity Problems

  • Intel Proset wireless adapter and configuration program:
    • It is advised that you uninstall the Intel program and use the Windows program (Windows Zero Config) to configure the wireless setting.
  • Some Dell computers with Trumobile wireless adapters
    • WPA2 and WEP settings are swapped. You will need to manually reset the connection. Once you connect o UAWiFi, your system will cache your credentials indefinitely. If you need to change the login, it is required that you remove and re-creat the network definition completely.
  • The AHSL Tucson Library laptops are not able to connect to UAWiFi.

UAWiFi – The premium service!

  • Faster than UAPublic (1 mbps – 54 mbps)
  • Secure, encrypted connections.
  • Available to all UA affiliates who have a NetID.
  • Provides you with an “on campus” IP address.
  • Requires a NetID and Password to log in.
  • You must first register your NetID and password (it takes about 10 seconds)

UAPublic

  • Not as fast as UAWiFi, (256kb limit)
  • Unencrypted
  • Allows library patrons to connect to the Internet WITHOUT using a NetID and Password
  • You will get an “off campus” IP address, so you will need to authenticate to access library and other UA resources
  • Currently this is the only access method available for handheld computers (e.g. PDA, WinCe)
  • Restricted to allow only web-browsing and VPN connections.
