Arts, Wellness and Health Humanities Reception

Date:
Nov 20, 2019

Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2019
4-6 p.m.

Please join us for a reception and short program to learn about two new library services.

The University of Arizona Health Sciences Library, in collaboration with the College of Medicine - Tucson’s Program in Medical Humanities, will host a reception to showcase the Arts, Wellness and Health Humanities Reading Collection and Reflection Room.

Funding was generously provided by the College of Medicine - Tucson’s Curricular Affairs office, and Program in Medical Humanities, directed by Ellen Melamed, lecturer. The support was used to furnish the Reflection Room and buy materials to develop the reading collection. The Reflection Room is furnished with mats, a yoga bench, a meditation pillow, serene imagery and shelving. It is one of the first reflection rooms on campus, and the first for the University of Arizona Libraries. It provides a private, quiet and comfortable space for reflection or meditation and is available to students, faculty, residents, fellows and staff.

The Arts, Wellness and Health Humanities Reading Collection will enhance curricular programming with materials on humanistic perspectives to health and health care. The collection is comprised of unique and thought-provoking materials that highlight the intersection of humanities and health. The collection will also include University of Arizona Press publications, such as Voices from the Ancestors: Xicanx and Latinx spiritual expressions and healing practices, American Indian Medicine Ways: spiritual power, prophets, and healing, Migrant deaths in the Arizona desert: la vida no vale nada, Global Indigenous Health: reconciling the past, engaging the present, animating the future, to name a few. Visitors can read poetry, short stories, essays and more as they relax comfortably in the library.

The reception is an opportunity for the campus community to meet and mingle with health humanities enthusiasts and experience works of art produced by students. The reception will take place in the Room 2101 at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Library.

Please RSVP for the Arts, Wellness and Health Humanities Reception by Nov. 25.
