Clinical Databases

PubMed
PubMed indexes over 6,000 journals and contains many nursing journals. PubMed database contains citations (title and author of the article, the name of the journal in which the article is published as well as the volume, issue number, date and page numbers.) Over 80% of PubMed citations have abstracts. PubMed does not contain the full text of articles. The Arizona Health Sciences Library provides links to the full text of articles in PubMed for those journals purchased by the library. The database MEDLINE is contained within PubMed. PubMed is free and available to everyone. To access PubMed, go to PubMed on our site select the link PubMed UA/UMC Only. If you are off campus, you will be prompted to enter your NetID and password.

CINAHL
CINAHL, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, is smaller than PubMed. It contains nursing and allied health journals. CINAHL contains some journals not indexed in PubMed. CINAHL indexes over 3,000 journals, conference proceedings and a small selection of books. CINAHL does not contain the full text of journal articles. The Arizona Health Sciences Library provides links to the full text of articles for those journals the library purchases. CINAHL is a subscription-based database. Some hospitals do not subscribe to CINAHL and as a nurse, you may not have access to CINAHL after you graduate. [Note: If you are off campus, you will be prompted for your NetID and password.]

Cochrane Library
The Cochrane Collaboration created and maintains the Cochrane Library. The Cochrane Collaboration, established in 1993, is an international network of 28,000 health professionals, experts in their own areas of medical or nursing practice. In March of 2009, systematic nursing reviews were added to the Cochrane Library and continue to be part of the Cochrane Collaboration's database. The Cochrane Library contains both the abstracts and the full text of systematic reviews.

MD Consult
MD Consult offers easy-to-search access to full text articles from over 80 medical journals and Clinics, as well as extensive excerpts from 50 leading medical reference books across a wide range of specialties. MD Consult also provides clinically relevant drug information, 13,000 patient handouts and full disease profiles containing diagnostic, treatment, pharmaceutical and follow up information for all health professionals. Nursing students will also find the laboratory test recommendations for disease diagnosis very useful.

PsycINFO
PsychINFO covers the literature in medical and nursing journals related to psychology and psychiatry. Whenever your research topic contains a psychological component, you should consider searching PsycINFO. PsycINFO does not contain the full text of journal articles. The Arizona Health Sciences Library provides links to the full text of articles for those journals the library purchases. PsycINFO is a subscription-based database and, as a nurse, you may not have access to PsycINFO after your graduate.

Specialized Databases

ABI/INFORM (Business Database)
ABI/Inform database contains many full text articles. It is an excellent source of information related to the business of health care such as health insurance, hospital and long term care management, information in individual companies and human resources.

Academic Search Complete (General Academic Database)
Academic Search Complete coves more than 12,500 journals and a total of more 13,200 publications including monographs, reports and conference proceedings. Topics include many areas of academic study including animal science, anthropology, biology, chemistry, ethnic & multicultural studies, food science & technology, physics, psychology, religion, theology, veterinary sciences, women's studies, zoology and many other fields.

Biological Abstracts - BIOSIS Previews (Biology, Clinical Medicine, Conference Proceedings)
Biological Abstracts - BIOSIS covers all areas of biology, but tends to focus more on basic biology and its coverage of clinical medicine is not as deep as PubMed. Biological Abstracts - BIOSIS indexes journal articles, books and book chapters, selected U.S. patents and conference literature. BIOSIS is an outstanding source of conference abstracts not available in PubMed.

Lexis/Nexis Academic Universe (News, Company Information)
Lexis/Nexis provides access to full text documents and records from more than 45,000 legal, news and business sources. Nexis includes transcripts of government hearings and news transcripts from television and radio. Nexis is the premier database for searching newspaper articles and newswires. Coverage is global.
